Improving Balance to Prevent Serious Falls

Falls can cause serious injury and result in many months of inactivity, and reduced independence. There are many contributing factors to falling, such as: • Muscle weakness • Difficult with balance and walking • Medication • Low Blood Pressure • Being 65 or Older Research has shown that a third of people around the age of 65 will fall at least once a year and suffer a serious injury. By age 80, about 50% will experience such a fall. How Can Physical Therapy Help? A physical therapist can assess your balance and any deficits that may lead to an increased chance of falling. Your physical therapist will develop a plan that improves your balance, builds strength, and increases your aerobic activity—all are important to preventing serious injuries from a fall.
